Sculptural Pieces

My Sculptural series of work are an opportunity for me to move beyond making even and regular shaped items and onto creating one of a kind pieces. I employ rougher building techniques to allow the building process to take control of the design. Often these pieces are built without a completed design in mind but just an overall concept and perhaps a final colour or organic element to help guide the final outcome. The finished look is often uneven and irregular but by utilising the final colour and organic elements, I am able to create an overall balanced design.

Life Pods

As climate change continues to alter life on earth and our future looks more uncertain, I can imagine a time where life pods leave our planet carrying the last remnants of organic life from our world. Each of these pieces represents a dying world and contains a removable pod for the organic material to escape and drift off to find another world. Each piece started with an examination of the organic material to study it’s shape and form to provide guidance for the building stage. I then rough built the piece allowing the building process to take control of the overall design, but using the organic material as inspiration. Often the final colour choice comes to mind as I build, or is driven by the organic material itself, with the aim being to create a seamless connection between the organic material and the ceramic piece.

Fantasy in Red

In this series of work have brought together three concepts:

  • Objects that appear to float,

  • Objects that have two functions,

  • Objects that start as geometric shapes but become more unstructured during the design.

I like to create pieces that have thin parts in their bases. This gives the impression that the object may topple or fall over, almost floating, like in a dream or a fantasy world. These objects are pushing the boundaries of gravity, so to speak. Of course I don’t want them to fall so widening them at the base creates stability. Two opposing forces that exist together.

I also like the idea of things that are ordered or geometric becoming rough or unordered. Starting with regular shapes; circles, triangles or squares, the objects start to balloon out or get out of control. Then at the finish they come back into order of geometric shapes.

The third concept is that that things can have to functions. At the heart of them they are vases or urns, but by adding arms they become creatures in a fantasy dream.

One off pieces

From time to time I create unique one off pieces as part of the process of experimenting with new forms and designs.
