About

Originally from Wellington, I studied Horticulture and Landscape Design at Massey University in New Zealand. A life long interest in art led me to a sculpture and ceramic course at Hungry Creek Art School and a glass casting course at Mairangi Arts.

Inspiration for my work comes in many form; I am influenced by bold colours, textures and patterns as well as intricate designs from the world around me. Also my exploration of myths, legend ancient history and different cultures and religions, have had an impact on my designs. All of these things excite my imagination. Everyday I think about art and how I can make, paint or build forms and textures and incorporate new stories or issues into my work.

I started with simple painting, but because I like the tactile quality of my materials, my work soon became heavily textured and three dimensional. I often add layers of wood, cardboard, resin, wire and recycled items to by designs. This progression led naturally to sculptural work which I continue to explore in different mediums such as ceramics, stone, concrete and glass casting. Origami has also been a fascination for me and I was inspired to create a body of work by folding intricate sculptural forms from boldly patterned paper.

Ceramics has become an ongoing fascination for me. Clay has an amazing tactile quality and through it can be used to make many mundane objects like plates, cups etc. It can also be sculpted into an unlimited array of organic shapes and designs. I enjoy experimenting with textures, colours and different forms to create a body of work. With the addition of other organic components to my work, the inorganic is truly becoming organic.
